It was dedicated to the production of wine and passes. It has a population of 3,523 inhabitants.
Benalgabon was founded by Arabs many centuries ago. They perfected new agricultural techniques for the cultivation of different crops there and converted the vineyards especially into an important source of wealth.Consequently the town prospered considerably until the final years of the re-conquest. Modern day Benalgabon is conveniently close to the golf course at Añoreta, 18 holes, and the coastal towns of Rincon de La Victoria and La Cala del Moral as well as the new motorway on which the airport can be reached in less than an hour. The village is within the municipality of Rincon de La Victoria and is only a short drive north from this very popular coastal town with its well known beach restaurants. The bars and restaurants of Benalgabon also offers the visitor a variety of delicious local dishes. The town was connected by rail to the provincial capital Malaga at the beginning of the twentieth century and benefitted commercially for many years as a result.
The service was discontinued in the sixties but quaint and attractive railway station buildings still exist along the coast and there is talk of resuming the rail link with Malaga in the near future. The church of La Virgin de La Candelaria, dating from the 16th century, the flower bedecked streets and the shady plazas contribute to an ambience of old world peace and tranquility. The fort of Casa Fuerte de Bezmiliana near the beach, was built during the reign of Carlos the Third of Spain 1759-1788. The coat of arms of the monarch decorates the principal facade. It was an important martial structure in its time and identical buildings were constructed for military purposes in the American possessions. It was refurbished recently and serves as an exhibition centre, conference and concert hall and home to the Centro de Documentacion de Estudios de la Axarquia. Another interesting visit could be made to what´s left of the ancient city of Bezmiliana dating from the 11th century. The present day location of this monument is at an area known as Gran Sol.
