El pueblo de Alcaucin está situado a 54 kilómetros de Malaga y a 20 kilómetros de Velez-Malaga. Desde Malaga hay un servicio diario de autobuses. El pueblo se encuentra en las laderas de la Sierra Tejada a 508 metros por encima del nivel del mar y tiene una población de 1.500 habitantes.
El cercano puerto de Zafarais, que da acceso a la provincia de Granada, se abre dramáticamente entre montes como una enorme letra uve y forma una parte característica del paisaje de la localidad.
Los Fenicios construyeron una fortaleza aquí que más tarde fue utilizada por los Árabes, los cuales dieron al pueblo el nombre de Al cautín, “Los Arcos”. En 1487 el municipio cayó en manos de las fuerzas de los Reyes Católicos durante el último periodo de la Reconquista.
El pueblo está rodeado de olivares, viñedos y pinares. En el centro de la población se levanta la iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, construida en el siglo dieciocho. Otro edificio interesante, la ermita de Jesús del Calvario, se encuentra en la parte alta del pueblo desde donde hay vistas panorámicas de la campiña que rodea el municipio. Naturalmente hay también algunos bares y restaurantes, pequeñas tiendas para las necesidades diarias, bancos y un centro de salud. Hay excelente acceso por carretera desde la costa y desde la nueva autovía del Mediterráneo.
