Welcome to Totalan...
Views of the area

This tiny village is located at twenty two kilometres from the provincial capital Malaga and is 290 metres above sea level. The surrounding vineyards are the principal source of income and the local wine is said to be of excellent quality. Almond and olive groves are also to be found around the town but to a lesser degree than many of the villages in the Axarquia region.Very little is known of the origins of the village. The church there, dedicated to Santa Ana, is of modest appearance and simple lines and dates from the sixteenth century. It is believed that the town was settled by people fleeing from the almost constant pirate attacks on the coast in bygone days. The town also suffered considerable losses during the Phylloxera scourge, which towards the end of the 19th century devastated the vineyards in the province in general. It was first detected in the nearby town of Moclinejo and spread uncontrolled throughout the region. Totalan today is a quiet spot, away from it all, the streets are steep and narrow and the general ambience is one of secluded tranquility
