Welcome to TORROX...

Facts and photos of the area The Axarquia region in the eastern part of the province of Malaga has a total of thirty one whitewashed villages. They nestle on hillsides, perch on mountain tops or are hidden away in deep lush valleys. Each one has its own personality and charm and Torrox, situated at 44 kilometres on the eastern coastline from the provincial capital Malaga, has its share of enchantment and fascination. It is 145 metres above sea level and enjoys sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline and the mountains of the Sierra Almijra Wildlife Reserve. These mountains, snowcapped in winter, dominate the northern part of the province, provide a natural protection from the north winds and mark the boundary between Malaga and Granada. The mild temperatures in the Torrox area, without substantial differences between summer and winter, have made it, down through the centuries and to the present day, an attractive and popular area of the Malaga coastline. Tropical fruit such as Avocado, Mango and Chirmoya thrive in the Torrox valley, one of the most fertile in Andalucia and the climate is proudly proclaimed as " Mejor clima de Europa", the best climate in Europe. Torrox, like most of the Axarquia region, is steeped in history and offers a magical combination of sea and countryside. The earliest known inhabitants were from the neolithic period but little is known of their presence. However, the Romans, established an important trading centre here and the ruins of their city " Villa Clavicum" bear witness to what must have been an important hub of commerce. The ruins of ceramic ovens, thermal baths and factories can be seen to this day. The Roman civilization prospered here from the 1st to the 4th century A.D. Later, during the Moorish period Torrox again became a thriving town, famed along the length and breadth of the Mediterranean for its agricultural products and dyed silk. The town retains a strong Moorish presence with its narrow winding streets, arches, charming plazas and quiet bubbling fountains. The local cusine, in the manner of most of the Axarquia region, is simple but succulent. Popular dishes can be enjoyed with local wines in the many bars and restaurants in the shady plazas and streets around the centre of the town, where you will also find the local 'Mercado'. The beaches of the coast with their popular "chiringitos", beach restaurants, are only a ten minute drive away, ideal for family outings. The new motorway which passes to the south of Torrox makes it easy to reach Nerja and Torre del Mar and other coastal towns and villages as well as the airport which is about an hour?s drive away. The motorway also passes close to the very popular An~oreta golf course in Rincon de La Victoria, a point to be remembered by golf lovers. Torrox, like many of the mountain villages, has much to offer. The tranquility and the easy pace of life soothe the soul and charm the heart. Torrox has worked it magic for centuries and has assimilated many civilizations. Why not let it weave its magic on you ?
