Welcome to Colmenar...
Views of the area

The town of Colmenar is located 694 metres above sea level 30 kilomatres from Malaga. It has a population of 3.424 inhabitants and a varied and properous local industry based mainly on agricultural products. The excellent honey produced in this town is also much appreciated far and wide.

Man was present in this region in neolithic times and evidence has also been found of Roman and Arab settlements. In Cortijo de los Moriscos Roman coins have been found and in Cortijo de los Guájaras a slate mould used for the manufacturing of Islamic medals has been discovered. But the history of this interesting town was also marked by political upheaval after the fall of Velez in the year 1487.

At the present time the historic part of the town still retains the old Arab style of winding, narrow streets bordered by flower bedecked two storey whitewashed houses with an internal patio, very much used during the spring and summer months. The parochial church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is perhaps the town´s most representative monument. Similar to many churches in towns dotted around the Axarquia region, construction on the building was commenced in the 16th century and finished halfway through the 17th. Another monument well worth a visit is the hermitage of Nuestra señora de la Candelaria, patron of the town. The building was begun in the 17th century and since then has undergone quite a few changes. Places of interest outside the town are the caves of Los Chivos, La Pulsera, Mina de Caravaca and the cortijos mentioned above.

It is an elegant and appealing village, attracting quite a few tourists because of its proximity to Malaga from where there is a daily bus service. It has shady, tree lined avenues, shops, banks, bars and restaurants as well as a municipal swimming-pool.

The white tower of the parochial church soars over the winding streets and in the warm climate life feels good to be lived.
