This small town is located at 416 metres above sea level in a south facing setting with panoramic views of the countryside and the Mediterranean. Its population (about 1.300 people) is mostly involved in agriculture, tending the local vineyards, almond and olive groves: Arenas wine is well known locally for its quality.
Very near the town, in a commanding position on a peak that dominates the area, are the ruins of Bentomiz castle. It is believed to have been built by the Romans and was used during the Arabic period in the defence of the local region. During the reconquest it was surrendered to the armies of the Catholic kings shortly before Velez-Málaga fell to Christian forces in 1487. In 1492, during a period of political upheaval in 1492, the Moriscos Moors who had converted, or been forcibly converted, to Christianity used the fort as a refuge. This ancient fortress, now in ruins, enjoys splendid views of sea and mountains.
Present day Arenas is a typical village of the Axarquia enjoying a quiet, tranquil lifestyle. There are shops, bars and other amenities as well as a daily bus services to the Velez-Málaga, which is just 10 kilometres away, and the coast, while Málaga can be reached in about an hour.
