This village is 150 metres above sea level and is situated 45 kilometres from Malaga and 14 kilometres from Velez-Malaga. It dates from the 18th century when it was a busy crossroads to a from many areas of the Axarquia region. An inn catering for weary travellers who arrived in stage coaches and horse drawn carts, was established in the early days of the history of the village and was subsequently added to and adjoined by other buildings. Today the same old well preserved inn stands on the same road alongside the parish church of San Miguel. Viñuela is principally know for the dam constructed on the Guaro river which constitutes one of the main sources of water in the Axarquia. It stands at a height of 465 metres and has a capacity for 170 million cubic metres of water which is used to irrigate 2.700 hectares of cultivated land. The local agricultural produce is made up of olives. grapes, cereals and citrus fruit.
