Vélez Málaga is the capital of the Axarquia region to the east of the province of Malaga.It has a population of 53.000 people living in the areas which make up the community, the old town itself, Torre del Mar on the coast and the port of Caleta de Velez.Fishing and agriculture, including the cultivation of many subtropical and tropical fruits, are the principal industries and it is a thriving, hardworking community. It is a very beautiful location with a gentle climate all the year round. The climate and the setting have worked their magic on many north European families who have set up holiday or permanent homes here. Vélez Málaga is steeped in history. Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs have all contributed to the chequered history of this lovely part of Andalucia in southern Spain. Among the many monuments which bear witness to its historical legacy one of the most remarkable is the Arab fortress in the old town dating from the 8th century.
