This tiny town has a municipal area of barely eight square kilometres. A pleasant drive from the main coastal road at Benajarafe will get you easily to the village but it can also be reached from Velez-Malaga via Benamocarra after a drive of 14 kilometres. It is 35 kilometres from Malaga. The village is situated at 310 metres above sea level and relies for its water supply on the Iznate river which flows past nearby. The name of the town derives from the Arabic word for castle and at the end of the fifteenth century the Moorish occupation ended with the surrender of Iznate and other towns in the area to the Christian forces.

Pleasant narrow winding streets and whitewashed houses with their balconies adorned with flowers gladden the heart of the visitor to this village. It has a population of about 700 people, a good many of whom are active in the care of the local vineyards, almond and olive groves. The hamlet of Cajiz, populated mainly by farmers and farm labourers is close to Iznate.The most interesting building in the village is the church of San Gregorio dating from the 16th century. Visitors can stay overnight in a hostal in the town and villagers and visitors alike can enjoy a glass of wine and tapas or some of the succulent local dishes in any of the three village bars.
