This charming village is located just north of the popular seaside resort of Nerja. Its dramatic setting is 435 metres above sea level and from the village the views of the countryside and the Mediterranean coastline are stunningly beautiful. It has a population of approximately 2.200 people and enjoys easy access to the old coastal road as well as the new motorway. The international airport at Malaga can be reached in an hour and the popular beaches on the coast are only a short drive away. There is a daily bus service to the coastal towns and the provincial capital. The town nestles on the southern slopes of Sierra de Enmedio which forms part of the Sierra Almijara mountains, the boundary line between the provinces of Malaga and Granada.

The area is irrigated by the river Chillar which flows into the sea near Nerja. The waters are used for vegetable and potatoe plots which are common in the area as well as plantations of subtropical fruits such as avocados and custard apples. The old traditional groves of almond and olive trees as well as vineyards are also predominant in the area and the village has a factory, the former palatial home of the Duke of Fernan Nuñez, which produces sugar cane syrup. Archaeological investigation has revealed that the area has been populated since the dawn of time and there is ample evidence which indicates that Phoenicians and Romans established communities here. Roman ruins have been found as well as coins from the first century A.D. In the years after the re-conquest so much pressure was brought to bear on the Arab population remaining in the area, part of the former Kingdom of Granada, that a rebellion took place.

A fierce battle was fought in Frigiliana, especially around the area of El Peñon de Frigiliana, ending in the defeat of the Arab forces. The area was subsequently populated by people from the neighbouring provinces. The village is divided up into two sections, the old Arab quarter with its winding, cobbled and shady streets and the new quarter. The main street which winds through the old town ends in a square where the parochial church of San Antonio is located. It was built in 1676 and among many details of architectural interest the exterior doors, with their lovely adornments, should not be missed. Modern times have brought all the amenities required by visitors and the local population. There are restaurants, bars and quiet terraces to while away the hours and enjoy the tranquil lifestyle.
