The lovely whitewashed village of Canillas de Aceituno, at 645 metres above sea level, is tucked into the foothills of the mountain range of Sierra Tejeda. It has a population of 2.300 inhabitants and is surrounded by fertile hillside plantations of almond and olive groves as well as terraces of fig, orange, lemon and medlar trees. There is excellent access to the village from the coastal town of Torre del Mar and the bustling capital of the Axarquia region, Velez-Malaga. The name of the village derives from the latin Cannillae (area of sugar cane) and the arabic Azeytuni (woven and dyed silk) the latter bearing testament to the thriving silk industry which prospered from the VIII up to the XV century. The village came under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Granada until, the “reconquista” when after the fall of Granada, it was occupied by troops of the Christian forces. Nowadays, Canillas de Aceituno has a thriving tourist industry. The towering peak of La Maroma in the Sierra Tejeda mountains, snow-capped in winter, provides a majestic backdrop as the visitor approaches the village from the coast. Comfortable accommodation is available as well as a selection of bars, restaurants and many outdoor sporting activities. |
