MAP OF THE AXARQUIA REGION (Click to enlarge)These whitewashed mountain villages are surrounded by a wildlife reserve where mountain goats wander freely and eagles soar over the mountains. The higher peaks are snowcapped in winter. It is a stunningly beautiful setting for a holiday or a retirement home. All of the larger villages have supermarkets, banks, modern facilities and services which have been tastefully integrated to respect the historic architecture. There is an abundance of excellent cuisine at very low prices and locally produced wine and dried raisins are made from the large annual harvest of grapes. The olive oil is wonderful. Locally grown fruit and vegetables including avocados, mangoes and other exotic fruits can be purchased fresh daily from the municipal market. There is much evidence of the Phoenicians, Romans and Moorish occupation of the area. Moorish irrigation channels are still being used and many Roman ruins can be seen on the Paseo Maritimo in Torrox Costa. Annual carnivals and fiestas, usually saints days, provide many opportunities for all ages to join in the fun with the friendly local people. |
