Almuñecar is situated on the Costa Tropical, Granada´s Mediterranean coastline. The history of this lovely seaside town had its beginning many centuries before the birth of Christ. This long interesting history has know  Phoenician and Roman  colonizations  as well as Egyptian, Greek and Carthaginian influence. The splendour of the Roman and Arab periods is also evident through the many testimonies which have come down to us through the centuries. Of special note are the remains of the Roman civic buildings and the marvellous aqueduct which dates from 1 B.C. The splendour of the Arab period is evident in the medieval fort built on the ruins of a previous Roman fortification. In Almuñecar´s  Museum of Archaeology the visitor can enjoy inspecting an interesting collection of diverse historical objects found over the years in the town and countryside.

Almuñecar enjoys a splendid setting between the sea and the mountains of the hinterland.  For nature lovers there is the Cerro Gordo National Park and the beach at Cantarrijan as well as  the limpid waters of  the Mediterranean along the coastline here which attract scuba-divers from around the world. In present times tourism is an important part of the local infrastructure. The friendly people and the mild, sunny climate contribute to its popularity and bring to mind such words as Shangrila or Paradise.
